Monday’s windstorm that resulted in thousands of power outages throughout Western Pennsylvania appears to be winding down.
Gusts peaking around 45 mph to 55 mph left about 10,000 customers without power in Allegheny and Westmoreland counties Monday. As of 6:30 a.m. Tuesday, First Energy and Duquesne Light are reporting about 250 outages remain.
Winds may reach gusts of 25 mph to 30 mph Tuesday, said Jared Rackley, meteorologist for the National Weather Service Pittsburgh office in Moon.
“There could be a few isolated power outages, if a weak tree limb blows down,” Rackley said, “but it certainly won’t be widespread.”
Bands of snow are expected to continue moving through the region Tuesday, dropping about an inch in certain areas. Western Pa. communities received anywhere from a ½ inch to 3 inches of snow Monday, Rackley said.
“Because of the moderate to heavy snow under the bands themselves, what we’ve gotten already is dependent on whether you were under a band and how long you were under a band,” he said.
Snowfall is expected to wind down around 8 a.m. before picking back up in the evening, Rackley said. Main roads should be clear for Wednesday morning’s commutes, he said.
Wind chill dipping into the teens and about 2 to 3 inches of snow are forecast for New Year’s Eve, Rackley said.
“By the time anyone’s at First Night,” he said, “it will be pretty chilly.”
