Now there’s no excuse for not going to confession — although it might require a bit of a drive.

St. Thomas More University Parish in Indiana will stay open for 24 hours April 5-6 for the “24 Hours for the Lord” confession initiative encouraged by Pope Francis.

The Catholic parish, which provides campus ministry to Indiana University of Pennsylvania, will have confessors on hand from 1 p.m. April 5 to 1 p.m. April 6, the Diocese of Greensburg said.

“‘24 Hours for the Lord’ was started in 2014 by Pope Francis as a way of encouraging local churches to make the sacrament of reconciliation (confession), along with Eucharistic adoration, available for a continuous period of 24 hours,” said the Rev. Alan N. Polczynski, parish pastor.

To help promote the event, the parish mailed invitation postcards to parishioners throughout Indiana County, and bulletin notices were sent to every parish in the diocese’s four counties: Armstrong, Fayette, Indiana and Westmoreland. Also, display banners have been placed at all of the regional parish fish fry dinners.

St. Thomas More University Parish, the Catholic Student Association of IUP and the Diocese of Greensburg’s communications staff have been publicizing the event on social media.
