A woman missing from Fayette County since January was found dead, according to state police.

Melanie Prokop, 62, was found Wednesday evening in a wooded area off Kennedy Road in North Union Township, police said. Prokop, who was last seen Jan. 1 driving her white vehicle, was reported missing Jan. 2 by a family member after her vehicle was found on private property along Jumonville Road in North Union, according to Uniontown police.

The discovery prompted an “extensive search,” police said.

A man aiding in the search for Prokop was using his drone Wednesday and reported to officers he believed he had found Prokop’s body.

Uniontown and state police were able to identify the body as Prokop who was pronounced dead shortly before 7:30 p.m. by the Fayette County Coroner.

Further information was not immediately available.

We are asking for the public’s help in this matter. Thank you
