You can legally fish for less than $3 this Labor Day.
For Labor Day only, the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission is offering a specially priced fishing license for $1 plus a $1.90 processing and vendor fee. Also on Labor Day, special youth fishing at select lakes allows young anglers to keep any size panfish.
The special license price, plus fees, applies only on Labor Day, Sept. 2, for Pennsylvania residents and nonresidents.
Licenses are required for anglers age 16 and over, so there is never a cost for younger children.
Normally, a one-day resident license is $11.90 and nonresident is $26.90, which includes the processing and vendor fees. An annual state fishing license for a resident costs $22.90 and $52.90 for a nonresident, including processing and vendor fees.
The commission is offering the special rate to encourage residents and tourists to fish.
The special license is now available for purchase online at www.GoneFishingPA.com or by visiting one of more than 700 license issuing agents.
Labor Day also is Mentored Youth Panfish Day. Youth anglers and their mentors can fish and keep any size panfish on 20 waterways designated as Panfish Enhancement Lakes.
Youth who have a free mentored youth permit or have purchased a voluntary youth license and a properly licensed mentor 16 years of age or older may keep fish under the minimum size, according to the Fish and Boat Commission.
All other regulations and daily limits are in effect.
The Panfish Enhancement Lakes are managed to increase the number and size of panfish including bluegill and sunfish, black and white crappies, and yellow perch.
Locally, the only specially designated Panfish Enhancement Lakes are in Westmoreland County, including Bridgeport Reservoir, Indian Lake, Lower Twin Lake, Northmoreland Lake and Upper Twin Lake.
