Thunderstorms leave minimal damage in Western Pa.
The severe thunderstorms that rolled through Western Pennsylvania on Sunday night led to just a few road closures and damages Monday morning.
Just after midnight, Shaler Police reported Babcock Boulevard was closed between Schafer and Evergreen roads because of a downed tree and utility pole. Babcock will remain closed throughout the morning commute, police said. Duquesne Light crews were on the scene as of 4:40 a.m.
As of 6 a.m., Duquesne Light was reporting 1,705 outages in Allegheny County and 191 outages in Beaver County. FirstEnergy was reporting 117 outages in Allegheny County, 16 in Armstrong, 111 in Butler, 25 in Fayette, 137 in Greene, 19 in Indiana, 17 in Washington, two in Beaver and none in Westmoreland.
The National Weather Service had issued a severe thunderstorm warning for areas north and east of Pittsburgh from about 8:15 to 9 p.m. Sunday. The storms caused about a 90-minute delay of the Steelers game at Acrisure Stadium.
Man shot in head in Central Lawrenceville
A man is in critical condition after police say he was shot in the head Sunday morning outside an establishment in Pittsburgh’s Central Lawrenceville.
Just before 4:30 a.m., officers were dispatched to Butler and 42nd streets for reports of a shooting, police spokeswoman Emily Bourne said.
Officers found a man inside the front door of an establishment in the 4100 block of Butler Street with a gunshot wound to his head, Bourne said. He was taken to a hospital in critical condition.
Witnesses told officers there was possibly an altercation before the man was shot.
Police continue to investigate.
Turnpike crash injures 1 in Marshall
One person was flown to a hospital Sunday afternoon following a crash on the Pennsylvania Turnpike in Marshall.
The crash, which involved a tractor-trailer and a vehicle, happened at 2:43 p.m. at the 29.7 mile marker in the eastbound lanes, according to the turnpike.
Crews with the Wexford Volunteer Fire Company said they extracted one person entrapped in the car.
The crash closed all lanes between the Cranberry and Butler Valley exits for about two hours.
I-79 off-ramp to Neville Island to close
The northbound Interstate 79 off-ramp to Neville Island will close starting Monday evening for about two months of work, according to PennDOT.
The closure is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. and last until Nov. 25 as crews repair decks. The ramp, Exit 65, carries traffic from northbound I-79 to Grand Avenue.
As a detour, drivers should continue on northbound I-79 past the closed ramp, take the Route 65/Emsworth/Sewickley (Exit 66) exit, keep left toward Glenfield, turn left onto Deer Run Road, turn left onto the ramp to southbound I-79 toward Washington, take the Route 51/Neville Island (Exit 65) exit.
The work is part of a $43.9 million I-79 “S-Bend” project that includes pavement reconstruction and bridge preservation.
