Columbia Gas of Pennsylvania says about 4,000 of its customers in Beaver County will be without natural gas for several days, the utility announced Sunday.

The affected areas are in and around Baden, Conway, Economy Borough and Freedom.

A list of streets impacted is available online.

Columbia Gas said it shut down service as a safety precaution after its technicians identified an issue with natural gas introduced into its system by a third-party, upstream gas supplier.

The specific nature of the issue was not disclosed.

“Columbia Gas is taking this measure out of an abundance of caution,” a notice from the utility said. “The shutdown and restoration of service is expected to take several days. The issue is under investigation but nothing at this point indicates that this was intentional on anyone’s part.”

In an update Monday, Columbia Gas said a warming center with refreshments, cots and blankets for affected customers who may want overnight accommodations will open at noon at the Conway municipal building, 801 First Ave.

In the original notice, Columbia Gas said after its technicians turn off all gas meters in the affected area, it will restore the flow of natural gas into the system and crews will go door-to-door to perform safety checks and relight natural gas appliances.

For customers not home during the service restoration process, door hangers will be left informing them of the outage and asking that they call Columbia Gas at 888-460-4332 for a technician to be sent to restore service.
