A Bethel Park woman woke early Wednesday morning to find a strange man in her shower, according to police.
The man would later tell officers he was simply looking for a place to take a shower.
The woman, who lives in an apartment complex on McMurray Road, told police she awoke about 5 a.m. to find the man, later identified as Michael Sefcik, in her shower, according to a criminal complaint. She told police she grabbed her phone and ran to a neighbor’s apartment to call 911.
When Bethel Park officers arrived, the opened the unlocked apartment door and found Sefcik standing in the living room, according to the complaint. When ordered to put his hands up, police said, Sefcik declined. Ordered to get on the ground, Sefcik allegedly told officers he didn’t have to.
Sefcik allegedly tried to shut the door on police, though one officer was able to get partially inside and use his Taser on Sefcik, according to the complaint. After a struggle, he was taken into custody.
At the police station, Sefcik told police he lived out of his truck, which he said he’d crashed. He said he had been in the woman’s apartment because he needed somewhere to shower, police wrote. He also said he’d gone through several cars at the complex looking for something with which to clean himself up.
Police said Sefcik began complaining of injuries he said he’d sustained in crashing his truck, though investigators noted he’d previously declined to be seen by medics. While awaiting an ambulance, Sefcik allegedly began banging his head off of the bars of the holding cell.
According to the complaint, Sefcik thrashed about and fought with officers as they tried to keep him from injuring himself, kicking one officer three or four times and trying twice to bite another.
He was eventually calmed and taken to UPMC Mercy.
Sefcik is charged with criminal trespass, resisting arrest and two counts of aggravated assault.
