Pittsburgh transit riders can now use their cellphones to pay fares on the region’s light-rail cars.
Pittsburgh Regional Transit announced Wednesday that mobile ticketing validators have been installed on all of its T rail cars. This includes the red, blue and silver lines that travel between Pittsburgh’s North Shore and the South Hills.
With the addition, all of the agency’s fleet now has mobile ticketing available, including the 700 buses, 80 light-rail cars and the city’s two inclines.
“Now, whether you ride the bus, rail, either incline or across different modes to get where you’re going, you’ll have access to the best our system has to offer,” said CEO Katharine Kelleman.

Starting Wednesday, Pittsburgh Regional Transit riders also can buy tickets using the Ready2Ride app, as well as load funds onto their mobile ticketing account by using agency vending machines, which are typically located at light-rail and busway stations. The agency also said it is finalizing agreements to allow riders to add funds to their mobile ticketing accounts at several local retailers.
Mobile ticketing is now being used for 13% of Pittsburgh Regional Transit trips, the agency said.
