A mainline water pipe burst Friday night in Scott Township, prompting officials to shut down a stretch of Washington Pike (Route 50) in both directions, officials said.

The South Hills thoroughfare could remain closed between Raceway Plaza Drive to Thoms Run roads until as late as 6 p.m. Saturday, emergency officials told Trib news partner WPXI-TV.

The broken pipeline flooded a nearby power station and buckled portions of the roadway.

Allegheny County emergency services officials reported the water main break and ensuing road closure shortly after 6 p.m. Friday.

Washington Pike remained closed while crews worked to clean up and make repairs and traffic appeared snarled in the surrounding area.

No further details were immediately available.
