Police are investigating why medics found a 12-year-old girl in a “disoriented and disheveled state” at a homecoming bonfire in South Park, officials said.

It’s unclear what may have happened.

Allegheny County 911 dispatchers sent South Park police to Evans Park about 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Allegheny County police Lt. Mike O’Keefe said.

“The girl was unable to explain how she arrived at the location or what had occurred,” county police said in a statement.

Medics took the girl by ambulance to UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, where she was evaluated then released to her parents “in good condition,” county police said.

Allegheny County detectives were called in to assist in the case on Friday.

County police said they could not yet provide further details and would not speculate amid “the uncertainty surrounding the events that led to the young girl’s discovery.”

“Investigators are working to interview the girl and anyone else who may have information concerning the circumstances of this case,” county police said.

Officials asked anyone with information to call the county police tipline at 1-833-255-8477 (1-833-ALL-TIPS). Callers can remain anonymous.

The South Park School District sent a letter to parents and caregivers notifying them about the police investigation.

“At this time, the district is unable to release any information due to the active investigation by the South Park Township Police Department and for privacy reasons,” said the letter signed by Superintendent Wayne P. Gdovic.

The district made counselors available Friday for students.
