A grand jury is hearing the case against a Pittsburgh man accused in the July 14 killing of a city police officer, Allegheny County District Attorney Stephen A. Zappala Jr. confirmed Tuesday.

The grand jury will decide whether charges against Christian Bey, 30, will go forward.

Zappala and others involved in the case have said nothing publicly since Pittsburgh police announced July 22 that Bey was arrested in connection with the killing of Officer Calvin Hall.

Hall was shot in the city’s Homewood neighborhood while off-duty. Family members have said Hall was trying to stop people from arguing and fighting.

Zappala would not make further comments about what happened when asked Tuesday.

The criminal complaint against Bey is sealed and grand jury proceedings are secret. The reason for the secrecy in this case is the safety of the witnesses, Zappala said.

“We lost one life already. I’m not going to lose another life,” he said. “I know there’s a lot of interest in the public about this particular crime.”

Zappala wouldn’t provide further specifics about the case but said he expected to be able to detail more publicly “in about two weeks.”
