A group effort by Pittsburgh paramedics, police and Public Works employees helped save 10 ducklings from a West End storm drain Wednesday morning.
Paramedics were driving on South Main Street at about 6:30 a.m. when a woman flagged them down and alerted them to the trapped ducklings, said Public Safety spokeswoman Alicia George. A Zone 6 police officer and Public Works employees came to assist.
The ducklings were trapped in a section of drain that spanned three grates and goes to Sawmill Run Creek, George said.
She said an alarmed mama duck paced nearby throughout the ordeal.
Rescuers used blankets to herd the ducklings into one area, and they were lifted out one by one and returned to their mother unharmed, George said.
