A pedestrian was injured in Pittsburgh on Sunday afternoon when an elderly driver lost control of their vehicle and struck the woman on the sidewalk.

Police, firefighters and EMS responded at about 1:30 p.m. to the 6300 block of Penn Avenue in East Liberty, not far from the Bakery Square development in Larimer.

The driver, who police did not name, “had accelerated across the intersection, lost control and struck a pedestrian on the sidewalk,” police spokeswoman Cara Cruz said.

The woman hit by the car, who police also did not name, was taken to an area hospital in critical condition. She later was upgraded to stable condition.

The extent of her injuries remained unclear Sunday.

The elderly driver was taken to the hospital “as a precaution,” Cruz said.

The police bureau’s collision investigation unit responded to the Penn Avenue scene to investigate.
