Members of the Oakmont-Verona Rotary Club joined together recently to continue a treasured tradition of donating new dictionaries to third-graders at Tenth Street and Redeemer Lutheran elementary schools in Oakmont and Verner Elementary in Verona.

A special thank you to Richard Barnes, Karyn Brooks, Bill Kern, Arlene Loeffler, Chris Martin, Don and Jackie Stoner, Jim Simmermon, and Stephanie Woolford, who worked together to make sure the project was completed successfully.

Nowadays, a quick click on an electronic device helps find a correct spelling, definition or plural form of a word. But teachers and parents once advised, “Look the word up in the dictionary. That is the best way to learn.”

As with many other advancements in technology that have made our lives easier — such as the microwave oven, GPS or online shopping — a few taps and our need is answered. Although these inventions help expedite chores and can be efficient, they also can go down or off-line. What happens next?

The answer is to develop another plan. Oakmont-Verona Rotarians hope that by supplying local third-graders with their own dictionaries, they always will have a resource close by to answer all of their learning needs, never needing another plan.

A total of 101 dictionaries were delivered in early November by club members, completing a tradition that was capped this year by celebrating the 95th anniversary of the Oakmont-Verona Rotary Club.
