North Allegheny Senior High School will temporarily go with full-remote learning on Monday and Tuesday.

The decision was precipitated by concern about the North Allegheny School District having enough teachers to cover classroom assignments. The District currently has 11 active covid-19 cases. As a result, 350 students and 47 staff members are in quarantine.

“Based on our contact tracing, and after consultation with the Allegheny County Health Department, we do not have any indication that these cases are connected or that covid-19 is spreading inside NASH,” said acting superintendent Patrick O’Toole in a letter to parents.

Due to the number of teachers that are absent and currently in quarantine, however, the District is not able to cover classrooms with staff in a manner that insures the safety and welfare of students, according to O’Toole.

The move covers all 11th and 12th grade students enrolled in the In-Person Instruction option but does not impact students enrolled in other buildings. All other buildings in the district, including the intermediate High School (9th and 10th graders) as well as elementary and cyber academy will remain open for in-person instruction.

“The health, safety, and well-being of our school community remain our priority,” said O’Toole. “We are following protocols aligned with guidance from the Allegheny County Health Department to minimize the risk of covid-19 and ensure the learning process can continue.”

The District hopes to resume In-person Instruction at North Allegheny Senior High on Monday, November 16, but will continue to consult with the ACHD according to O’Toole.
