A Duquesne police officer was shot after exchanging gunfire with a man early Wednesday morning, according to Allegheny County Police.
The officer sustained a gunshot wound to the foot and is in stable condition at a local hospital. The suspect Shyheim Cortez Berry, 28, of Duquesne, was also shot and is under police supervision at a hospital.
Berry is charged with criminal attempt homicide of a law enforcement officer, aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, aggravated assault, criminal trespass, and terroristic threats. When released, he will be transported to the Allegheny County Jail for arraignment, police said.
The incident began at 12:18 a.m. when county dispatchers were notified of shots fired near Catherine and Savey streets.
The Duquesne officer who was first to respond was met by gunfire as soon as he arrived, according to a county report. The officer returned fire, striking Berry in the leg.
Other responding officers took Berry into custody after he entered the basement of a vacant house, police said.
Berry is also in stable condition.

This is the fifth police officer shot in the county so far this year. Brackenridge police Chief Justin McIntire was shot and killed Jan. 2 and Tarentum officer Jordan Schrecengost was wounded in the same incident. On Feb. 6, McKeesport officer Sean Sluganski was shot and killed and Officer Chuck Thomas was wounded.
