Students and staff of North Allegheny School District are mourning the death of the head custodian at Hosack Elementary School.

Kevin Cavlovich, 30, died on Jan. 5, according to the Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s office.

“Mr. Kevin” had been a custodian for the North Allegheny School District for more than eight years, spending time at Peebles, McKnight, Marshall Middle, and most recently at Hosack.

“The news of Kevin’s passing is absolutely heartbreaking. Everyone that had the privilege of knowing Kevin during his time in the district would tell you that Kevin greeted every student and staff member with a smile and made everyone feel welcome,” said NA Superintendent Dr. Melissa Friez.

Last August, Cavlovich, of O’Hara Township received one of the school district’s Compass Awards for his exemplary work in support services.

“As the head custodian at Hosack Elementary, visitors to the school were warmly greeted with tidy grounds and a clean building because of the pride that Kevin took in his school and our district. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him,” Friez said.

District counselors and psychologists provided support at Hosack the days immediately following Cavlovich’s death to assist the students and staff in coping with the loss and will continue as needed, Friez said.

Staff members have been allowed time off work to attend his funeral, she said.

The Hosack Parent Teacher Organization is accepting donations to benefit his family. Hosack students can submit condolences that will be shared with them.

“What made him the best had nothing to do with his job description but with his ability to do what was needed with a smile, greet each student by name and connect with people through his quiet acts of kindness,” said Hosack Principal Carla Hudson.

The Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s office has not yet announced a cause of death for Cavlovich.
