Details emerged Tuesday about the man that a Churchill police officer fatally shot last week outside his Forest Hills home.

Police said Gregory Carlson, 48 was armed when they encountered him around 9:20 p.m. Thursday night outside his house in the 200 block of Glasgow Road. Officers from Forest Hills, Churchill and Swissvale responded.

Arriving officers “heard a firearm being chambered and a shot fired,” Allegheny County Police said. A Churchill police officer outside Carlson’s house shot him in the torso. He died at an area hospital about four hours later.

Local officials have been tight-lipped about the fatal officer-involved shooting, which followed similar shootings last month in Whitehall and Brentwood. Borough officials and police in both Forest Hills and Churchill repeatedly have declined to comment.

County police deferred to Churchill police to identify the officer who shot Carlson. They have not done so.

Carlson lived in California and Texas before moving to Pittsburgh in 1994 to study civil engineering at Carnegie Mellon University, according to his obituary.

On his first day in college, he met his future wife, Marni — they stayed together for 30 years and were raising a daughter, now 10, the obituary said. Carlson worked in construction management and was an avid reader who loved to listen to music.

Anyone with information can call the county police tip line at 1-833-ALL-TIPS (1-833-255-8477). Callers can remain anonymous.
