A pedestrian was killed early Wednesday when state police said he was hit by an SUV while walking in the center lane of the Parkway North inbound during a heavy rainstorm.

The crash was reported at 2:45 a.m. near mile marker 3 in Pittsburgh, between the exits for East and Venture streets.

The Allegheny County medical examiner’s office identified the victim as Rodney Hall, 47, of Pittsburgh.

The SUV driver was headed south in the center lane of the highway when they collided with the pedestrian. Police said the driver stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators. It was unclear from a police report why the pedestrian was walking in the middle of the highway.

Lanes were closed while police investigated.
