Four days after the national prohibition laws took effect, owners of the Kensington and Krick hotels of New Kensington were arrested for liquor violations. The owners and employees would face charges in federal court.

Ford City man real tank killer

Sgt. Joseph Lalish of Ford City was among standout marksmen of the 773rd American tank battalion which knocked out eight German tanks in a savage battle near Bastogne, Belgium. Lalish’s outfit became the first to pass the 100 mark in enemy kills.

911 call system takes effect

A luncheon at the New Kensington Holiday Inn marked the announcement of the 911 universal emergency number in the Alle-Kiski Valley. Those with 224 and 226 telephone prefixes in the Tarentum area will be the first to have the service.

About 100 people crammed into a basement room at St. Alphonsus School in Springdale after it was announced that a Pittsburgh Diocese task force has recommended closing the 94-year-old school because of declining enrollment and rising costs.

Allegheny County Judge John Zottola found Peter Dukovich of Hampton guilty of simple assault, acquitting the father of more serious charges after he slammed a referee to the floor during a fracas at a Hampton-Deer Lakes basketball game.

The Apollo-Ridge School Board approved preliminary construction plans for the $3.5 million renovation of Owens Field. Officials are hopeful that construction will be finished in time for the second half of the 2010 football season.

Jennifer L. Bertetto was named president and CEO of Trib Total Media, board Chairman H. Yale Gutnick announced. She replaces Ralph J. Martin, who resigned to become CEO of Civitas Media based in Davidson, N.C.
