For the 10th year, men will slip into, tie or strap on a pair of women’s shoes and walk 1 mile through Greensburg on April 18, literally walking in the opposite sex’s shoes.

Hempfield’s Blackburn Center, which works to educate the public about and end domestic and sexual violence, bullying and human trafficking, has hosted “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes” since 2011.

Scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. in St. Clair Park, the walk encourages area residents, families, community leaders, professionals, survivors and students to walk together in support of violence-free lives.

Over those 10 years, thousands of Westmoreland County residents have come together to call for the changes needed to end gender-based violence, according to a release.

Those men who choose to walk — or hobble — in women’s shoes offer a riveting sight as they make their way through town.

It also gives them a chance to proclaim solidarity and show support as they walk along with women, children and (leashed) pets.

Men also are welcome to wear their own foot gear.

On-site registration is $5, free to those 12 and under, and will begin at 9 a.m. in the park on Maple Avenue.

Women’s high-heeled shoes are available to loan to male walkers, who should register by April 1 to ensure receiving the proper size.

Parking will be available on East Pittsburgh Street, South Urania Avenue or in the lots located on South Maple Avenue.
