A streaming series based on the 1992 movie “A League of Their Own,” about the first female professional baseball league, will film in Western Pennsylvania.

Stars attached to the series include Abbi Jacobson (“Broad City”), D’Arcy Carden (“The Good Place”) and Chante Adams (“Bad Hair”).

Pittsburgh Film Office director Dawn Keezer said the 1940s-set Sony-Amazon Studios production for Amazon Prime Video is expected to start filming in early summer. An Amazon representative would not confirm the production’s filming location but the show has begun hiring crew members locally.

It’s unclear what locations “A League of Their Own” will use. Scouting for locations is underway.

Amazon ordered this reimagining of the Penny Marshall-directed movie to series in August 2020. The series was developed by Jacobson and writer Will Graham (“Mozart in the Jungle,” “Alpha House”).

“A League of Their Own” will introduce new characters who play in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League, which launched in 1943. The Hollywood Reporter says former real-life AAGPBL players are serving as consultants on the series.

In ordering “A League of Their Own” last year, Amazon said the show will take a deeper look at race and sexuality. In an interview published this week, Jacobson said the series will begin filming in June.

“It’s really a different take,” she told The Daily Beast, noting the series will have a more diverse cast than the movie. “And it’s also about queerness in a huge way. … Believe it or not, a lot of the women who played baseball were queer!”
