Following an active trade deadline Friday, the Pittsburgh Penguins announced an additional transaction, this time in house, as defenseman Ryan Shea was re-signed to a one-year deal.
Shea, 28, is now under contract through 2025-26 and will make $900,000 next season.
That’s up from the $775,000 he’s making in 2024-25, a contract signed on the first day of NHL free agency last July.
This season, Shea has appeared in 28 games for the Penguins, posting career highs in goals (two), assists (three) and points while averaging 16 minutes, 30 seconds (also a career-high) of nightly ice time.
Of late, the Penguins have deployed Shea on their top defensive pairing with Kris Letang, while primarily this season, Shea has factored in on the third pairing.
A left-handed shot who can play both sides of a defensive deployment, all of Shea’s 59 NHL contests have come with the Penguins.
Previously a career AHLer in the Dallas Stars’ system, Shea originally signed a one-year, two-way deal with the Penguins ahead of the 2023-24 campaign.
After earning a spot with the Penguins out of preseason camp two seasons ago, Shea navigated frequent trips between the NHL and AHL, as well as being placed on waivers in December of 2023.
By season’s end, he’d appeared in 31 NHL games, recording one goal.
