Snoop Dogg has addressed the “hate” he’s faced for performing at a Trump inaugural event earlier this month.
The “Drop It Like It’s Hot” rapper, 53, who performed at Trump’s Crypto Ball ahead of the inauguration, said that regardless of aligning himself with Trump, he’s “still a Black man, still 100% Black.”
“For all the hate, I’m going to answer with love,” Snoop, born Calvin Broadus Jr, told Instagram followers Sunday while smoking marijuana in his car.
“Y’all can’t hate enough for me. I love too much. Get your life right. Stop worrying about mine. I’m cool. I’m together. Still a Black man, still 100% Black. All out ‘til ball out or you fall out. … I ain’t going nowhere. I’m right here.”
Though some fans agreed Snoop is “not defined by a single party” and “can perform for whoever he want(s),” disgruntled fans didn’t mince words, with one calling Snoop a “sell out” and another saying “celebrated with the devil.”
“Not once have we ever turned our backs on you. … So your performance feels like a slap in our faces,” said one commenter. “I hoped you’d use the opportunity (since you were there) to speak truth to power. But nope! … This man is doing his best to dismantle everything YOUR ancestors bled and died for and you can’t even acknowledge you made a wrong move?”
Another commenter explained that while Snoop’s private life “is one thing,” standing by the president in a public forum and for entertainment was “dangerous to the community.”
One fan asked why Snoop — who was vocally anti-Trump in 2017 and vowed he would “roast” any artist performing for the “punk” — changed his tune.
“This is not about tearing you down it’s about you disappointing your people to support Trump after all the stuff you said!” the fan explained.
Rappers Nelly and Soulja Boy, as well as country artists Carrie Underwood and Billy Ray Cyrus, have also faced criticism for performing at festivities for Trump’s inauguration.
