After announcing the firing of head coach Neal Brown on Sunday, West Virginia will head into its bowl game with offensive coordinator Chad Scott as interim coach, the school announced Monday.
Scott has been with the Mountaineers since 2019, including the last two seasons as offensive coordinator and the three before that as co-offensive coordinator. He also coached at North Carolina, Kentucky, Texas Tech and Troy.
Brown was fired Sunday with a 37-35 overall record with three years left on his contract.
The Mountaineers are 6-6 overall and tied with Kansas State for eighth in the Big 12 with a 5-4 conference record. They can expect to receive a bid to a lower-tier bowl such as the Armed Forces Bowl on Dec. 28 in Shreveport, La., or First Responders Bowl on Jan. 3 in Dallas.
“I want to thank Coach Scott for agreeing to lead our team in bowl preparation. He has been a strong and great leader for our program, and someone who cares for our student-athletes,” athletic director Wren Baker said in a statement. “I appreciate his willingness to step forward to make for as smooth of a transition as possible. I have confidence that Coach Scott will have our team prepared and ready to play.”
