Firefighters rescued a Herminie man Thursday afternoon when a kitchen fire created smoke in his residence, a fire official said.

The man, who was not identified, was flown by medical helicopter from the Herminie area to an area hospital, said Herminie fire Chief Joe Marincic.

The man was in and out of consciousness when firefighters carried him out of a second-floor bedroom of the brick house in the 200 block of Sewickley Avenue, Marincic said. The house is along the main street of the Sewickley Township village.

The fire, which was reported at 5:34 p.m., was contained to the kitchen area, Marincic said. The Herminie fire hall is about three blocks from the scene of the fire, which was knocked down quickly, the chief said. The house sustained some water and smoke damage, Marincic said.

Three other people who were inside the house were able to leave on their own, Marincic said.

A state police fire marshal will investigate the cause, Marincic said.

Herminie firefighters were assisted by units from Lowber, Adamsburg, Rillton and Hutchinson.
