A veteran Pittsburgh police officer shot and wounded a man Tuesday morning in the city’s Garfield neighborhood.
Authorities said the officer was responding to a domestic disturbance in the 4900 block of Kincaid Street when the 20-year-old suspect began shooting.
The man fired multiple rounds at the officer, said Allegheny County Police, who are investigating.
The officer returned fire and struck the man three times, police said.
The incident began when the officer responded at 11:03 a.m. for a report of an armed man assaulting a woman, county police said.
Eight minutes later, the officer arrived and found the man outside a home, according to investigators.
Police did not provide details about what happened in the moments leading up to the exchange of gunfire.
Jim Madalinsky, a county police spokesman, said Tuesday he did not know if the man or the woman lived on Kincaid Street.
Madalinsky said he also did not know if police had been to the home before, whether the alleged shooter had a criminal record or if police were familiar with the suspect.
First responders rushed the wounded man to an area hospital in stable condition, county police said. He is expected to survive.
The female victim suffered facial injuries from the assault, police said.
Neither city or county police identified the suspect or the officer.
“There are no plans to name the officer at this time,” Pittsburgh police spokeswoman Cara Cruz said. She said the officer “has about 10 years on the job.”
Cruz declined further comment, directing questions to county police.
Madalinsky said no charges against the suspect have been filed yet.
The county police will turn their findings over to the Allegheny County District Attorney’s Office, which will determine whether the officer’s use of force was justified.
