A new chaperone policy at the four pools operated by Allegheny County that goes into effect Tuesday is an effort to increase safety and create a more enjoyable experience everyone, officials said in a Facebook post.

The policy comes on the heels of a similar one enacted at the Highland Park pool in Pittsburgh in late June. That policy was put into place after several incidents involving unaccompanied minors, city spokeswoman Maria Montano said.

The county’s new policy requires those 16 and younger to be accompanied by an adult at least 21 years old with valid photo identification.

In addition:

• While one parent may accompany all their children, a non-parent chaperone may escort no more than four children 16 and under.

• If an accompanied youth is banned from a pool, the chaperone will be banned for the same period of time.

• Chaperones must be present at the time of entry and remain at the pool.

Violators will be asked to leave, county officials said.

The pools at Boyce Park, Settlers Cabin, South Park and North Park are open daily from 11:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. For more, see AlleghenyCounty.us.
