A Uniontown man is charged with attempted homicide and aggravated assault in a June 11 shooting in the city that injured two men.
State police allege Santana Jones, 21, is one of two men who opened fire on two other men at about 3:30 p.m. outside a home on Varndell Street.
Authorities were searching for the second suspect and for a third man who drove a Dodge Charger that had dropped the two alleged shooters off nearby, at Fairview and Ridge streets.
Police said surveillance video shows the two suspects, who were wearing black face coverings, as they walked through the backyard of the residence, rounded a corner and then used a handgun and an AR-15-style rifle to fire multiple rounds at the other men, who were in a Ford Fusion sedan.
The shooting victims, driver Davontae Clayton and passenger Pharoah Sewell, fled in the sedan and flagged down responding troopers for assistance, according to court documents.
Police said Sewell, who was treated at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, W.Va., was shot several times in his right hip and also was bleeding from the back of his head. Clayton, who was treated at Uniontown Hospital, was not hit by any bullets but had a bleeding gash on his forehead caused by glass from car windows that were broken by the gunfire, police said.
Police said they identified Jones as a person of interest in the incident and noted that his physical description was consistent with the man seen firing the rifle. They learned Jones was supposed to be wearing an ankle monitor while awaiting trial in a separate case and, through tracking information obtained through Fayette County Adult Probation, placed him at the scene of the shooting.
Jones was arraigned Tuesday on charges including attempted homicide, aggravated assault, conspiracy, recklessly endangering another person and criminal mischief. He was denied bail and was placed in the Fayette County Jail, awaiting a July 2 preliminary hearing.
Online court records indicate Jones is awaiting adjudication in Fayette County Court on previous charges including simple and aggravated assault and disorderly conduct.
Uniontown police also were involved in investigating the shooting.
Police responded to the incident when they heard gunfire while at the scene of a fatal shooting reported at about 2 p.m. June 11 on Dunlap Street in Uniontown.
No arrests have been made in the earlier shooting, which resulted in the death of Joshua Stevens, 33, of Uniontown.
