Authorities have identified the man who died Tuesday in a natural gas explosion in Youngstown, Ohio, as Akil Drake, a former Penn Hills resident.

The blast shattered the facade of Realty Tower, which houses a Chase Bank where Drake worked, killing him and injuring seven others. One person remains in critical condition.

Drake, 27, was a 2015 graduate of Penn Hills High School, where he played football.

“The Penn Hills School District extends its deepest sympathies to Akil’s family as well as the other individuals impacted by this tragic explosion,” the district said in a statement. “Akil will be missed by us all.”

After attending Youngstown State University, Drake joined Chase in February 2021 as an associate banker before being promoted to relationship banker last year, according to a note sent to JPMorgan Chase employees and shared with TribLive.

“Akil was a special member of the Chase team,” JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon and CEO of Consumer and Community Banking Marianne Lake said in the statement. “We are devastated by the news and extend our deepest condolences to Akil’s loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.”

They described Drake as an active community member and devoted volunteer who was well-liked by customers and colleagues.

The cause of the explosion remains unclear. A spokesperson for the Ohio State Fire Marshal’s Office said it’s carrying out an investigation alongside Mahoning County officials, local first responders and other agencies.

The nearby Stambaugh Building and DoubleTree hotel are closed until further notice, according to a news release from Youngstown police. Officials continue to ask residents to avoid the area.
