A man and woman in Uniontown were displaced by an early morning house fire, and the man suffered burns while escaping the flames, according to firefighters.

The man was treated at the scene by medics and declined transport for further treatment, according to Uniontown fire Chief Scott Conn.

The man “ran past the fire and sustained some burns,” Conn said. “He was awakened by the fire and came out through the kitchen and front door. He escaped the house, ran down to the police station two blocks away and alerted them his house was on fire.”

The woman crawled to safety out a bedroom window in the one-and-a-half-story house, he said.

One of the family’s pets was unaccounted for, Conn said.

The fire on Vance Street also was reported by a neighbor to emergency dispatchers at about 3:15 a.m, according to a Fayette County 911 supervisor.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation. Fire, heat and smoke damage to the house was extensive, according to Conn.

“Because of the method of construction, the fire got into a lot of interior concealed spaces,” he said. “We had to chase it up through the finished half attic. It gutted out a good portion of the first floor.”

The occupants, who rent the house, are being assisted by the Red Cross, Conn said.

Firefighters remained at the scene until after 6 a.m.
