While many college football traditions are dying across the country, West Virginia will keep two alive during the 2024 season.
The Mountaineers’ opening game will be Aug. 31 at Milan Puskar Stadium against Penn State, marking the Nittany Lions’ first visit to Morgantown, W.Va., since 1992. It’s the third-longest series in Mountaineer history and will be played for the 61st time.
Two weeks later, West Virginia will visit long-time rival Pitt on Sept. 14 at Acrisure Stadium.
“Playing Penn State and Pitt in the same season used to occur every year around here, and I know our fans have appreciated having those two rivalries back on the schedule,” coach Neil Brown said in a statement.
The Backyard Brawl with Pitt returns to Acrisure for the second time since the rivalry was renewed in 2022. It’s the 107th meeting in the longest-running series in WVU history. The Mountaineers have won eight of the past 13 games, including last year’s 17-6 victory in Morgantown.
This season, West Virginia will play seven home games for the first time since 2016. West Virginia’s only other nonconference game is a home date against Albany of the FCS on Sept. 7.
The Big 12 opener is Sept. 21 at home against Kansas, followed by an open week. Then, the Mountaineers travel to Stillwater, Okla., to meet Oklahoma State on Oct. 5 before home games against Iowa State on Oct. 12 and Kansas State on Oct. 19 and a trip to first-time Big 12 member Arizona on Oct. 26.
The game at Cincinnati will be on Thursday, Friday or Saturday Nov. 7/8/9.
The second and last open weekend Nov. 2 precedes home games with Baylor on Nov. 16 and UCF on Nov. 23 before the Mountaineers conclude the regular season Nov. 30 at Texas Tech.
“When you add our nonconference games to the Big 12 slate, WVU once again will play a strong, competitive and challenging football schedule,” athletic director Wren Baker said in a statement.
