Traffic on Route 30 in Hempfield will be halted intermittently overnight beginning Monday, Sept. 25 as crews from contractor Charles J. Merlo demolish the old bridge that carried East Pittsburgh Street over the highway.

Traffic will be stopped for up to 15 minutes at a time, as needed, between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m., through Friday, Oct. 6, depending on weather conditions.

PennDOT said eastbound traffic on East Pittsburgh is shifting to a new replacement bridge but will remain limited to a single lane as construction continues.

The $7.6 million project will result in a new, two-lane single span built in the concrete box beam manner. It’s located adjacent to the old bridge. Work includes realignment and paving of the adjacent road and drainage upgrades.

Work is expected to wrap up in May.

A recent inspection resulted in a poor rating for the superstructure of the old East Pittsburgh Street bridge.
