Penguins goaltender Casey DeSmith leads United States to shutout of Denmark

A look at how players with connections to the Penguins have done in the ongoing International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World Championship Tournament:

Penguins goaltender Casey DeSmith made 22 saves for the United States in a 3-0 shutout of Denmark in a preliminary round game at Nokia Arena in Tampere, Finland on Saturday.

It was DeSmith’s first shutout of the tournament as he improved his record to 3-0-0.

Penguins forward Nick Bonino served as the United States’ top center and logged 16:28 of ice time on 29 shifts and was 13 for 17 on faceoffs (76.4%).

Primarily deployed as the United States’ second-line center, Penguins forward Drew O’Connor clocked 15:26 of ice time on 21 shifts, had one shot and was 10 for 17 (58.8%) on faceoffs.

Highlights:

The United States next game is against France on Sunday, 1:20 p.m. (EDT).

Penguins defenseman P.O Joseph had 19:29 of ice time on 27 shifts for Canada in a 3-2 loss to Switzerland at Arena Riga in Riga, Latvia.

Deployed on Canada’s third pairing, Joseph also recorded one shot.

Highlights:

Canada’s next game is against Norway on Monday, 9:20 a.m. (EDT).

Penguins forward Alex Nylander, operating as an extra or 13th forward, was limited to 5:27 of ice time on only six shifts for Sweden in a 4-0 shutout of France at Nokia Arena.

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins forward Justin Addamo, a Robert Morris product, clocked 13:31 of ice time on 18 shifts and has two shots while going 8 for 12 (66.6%) on faceoffs for France.

Highlights:

Sweden’s next game is against Denmark on Monday, 9:20 a.m. (EDT).

Penguins defensive prospect Thimo Nickl logged 16:54 of ice time on 21 shifts for Austria in a 3-1 loss to Finland at Nokia Arena.

Utilized on Austria’s top defensive pairing, Nickl, whom the Penguins have yet to sign, also recorded one shot.

Former Penguins forward Kasperi Kapanen scored the opening goal of the contest.

Highlights:

Austria’s next game is against Hungary on Monday, 1:20 p.m. (EDT).
