GREENSBORO, N.C. — Pitt and Duquesne officials are in the midst of talks that could bring their football teams together for the first time since 1939, possibly in one of the next few seasons at Acrisure Stadium, Pitt Athletic Director Heather Lyke said Thursday.

Duquesne has played Power 5 schools in each of the past two seasons — TCU in 2021 and Florida State in 2022 — and the Dukes are scheduled to play at West Virginia on Sept. 9.

Pitt regularly plays home games against FCS teams, including Youngstown State, Albany, Villanova, Delaware, New Hampshire and Rhode Island. The Panthers will play Wofford of the Southern Conference to open the 2023 season Sept. 2.

Because Pitt and Duquesne play football at different levels — Pitt in the FBS and Duquesne in the FCS — their football teams have met only seven times. Pitt holds a 5-2 edge, and all five of its victories were shutouts. All but one game was played in the 1930s.

The teams first met Oct. 26, 1901, with Pitt recording an 18-0 victory. Duquesne won the most recent meeting Oct. 21, 1939, 21-13, at Pitt Stadium.
