In this episode of the “Pittsburgh Pop” podcast, host Tim Benz and TV Talk columnist Rob Owen discuss Pittsburgh pop culture news of the moment, including Will Smith’s “Emancipation,” directed by Pittsburgh native Antoine Fuqua, and the 50th anniversary of the Immaculate Reception, which will be celebrated during the Christmas Eve Steelers game airing on NFL Network and KDKA-TV.
Benz and Owen discuss the NFL on Nickelodeon, which airs another game simulcast at 4:30 p.m. Christmas day.
Owen shares news of the latest “Saturday Night Live” departure, Cecily Strong, and he reviews the “Knives Out” sequel, “Glass Onion,” which streams Friday on Netflix. He says it’s funnier than the original and more self-aware, but the resolution to this early covid-set whodunnit is a little predictable and pat. It seems to lay the groundwork for one last twist that then never materializes. Still, there are terrific performances by Daniel Craig, though his amusing accent remains Kevin Spacey crossed with Foghorn Leghorn, and especially scene-stealer Kate Hudson as a dim social media influencer.
Benz offers his impressions of Netflix hit “Wednesday,” the season finale of “Andor” and Tom Cruise’s skydiving thank you to fans of “Top Gun: Maverick.”
