Westmoreland campus clippings: Penn-Trafford grad Josh Spiegel earns all-conference honors

Josh Spiegel became a fixture in the Penn State baseball lineup this season and put together an all-conference junior year.

A Penn-Trafford graduate, Spiegel was named to the All-Big Ten second team.

He played in all 55 games for the Nittany Lions (26-29) and started 53 of them as either a catcher or first baseman.

He had a team-leading 16 doubles, hit 10 home runs, drove in 42 runs and scored 33. He had 22 multi-hit games and hit a go-ahead, three-run homer against Pitt.

Men’s track and field

Saint Vincent: A pair of Bearcats earned All-Region honors from the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

Sophomore Tim Patterson was honored for his efforts in the 5,000-meter run, and junior Joey Bujdos earned recognition in the 800. Patterson won PAC titles in the 5,000 and 10,000 and broke a school record in the 5K at the Bucknell Bison Classic with a time of 14 minutes, 44.44 seconds.

He also won a 5K title at the All-Atlantic Region Championships in 14:44.73 and took first at the Cal (Pa.) John Falconi Invitational. Bujdos was a PAC champion in the 800 with a time of 1:52.30, an outdoor record for the event, and he also win the Carnegie Mellon Invitational, Slippery Rock Dave Labor Invitational and Westminster Invitational.

His best time came at the Swarthmore Last Chance meet (1:52.17).

Seton Hill: Senior Sam Hartman and freshman Gabriel McConville received All-Region accolades from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, Hartman in the 110 and 400 hurdles, McConville in the 1,500.

Women’s track and field

Seton Hill: Four Griffins earned All-Region honors from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. They were senior Alexis Cunningham (steeplechase), freshman Samantha Gravatt (javelin), freshman Hannah Smrcka (1,500; 5K) and senior Sydney Wolf (800; 1,500).

Football

Seton Hill: Senior cornerback Damonte Pratt was named a second-team All-American in Lindy’s Sports College Football Preview Magazine.

Pratt set a school record last season with seven interceptions, which tied for the second-most in all of Division II.
