A woman from Pittsburgh’s East End is on a roll as a contestant on the popular game show “Jeopardy!”
Margaret Shelton won for the third consecutive game on Thursday, amassing $17,200, to raise her three-day total winnings to $58,200.
On Thursday’s show, Shelton saved the best for last by wagering all of her $8,600 winnings on the Final Jeopardy! question that tested one’s knowledge of Italian history and the Mafia.
The questions was: “Pizzo means protection money; the Addiopizzo Movement was founded in this city in 2004.”
Shelton, who was in second place, correctly answered Palermo in Sicily.
The contestant who was in last place going into Final Jeopardy!, with $8,200, also correctly answered Palermo. But his $8,000 bet gave him only $16,200.

Shelton didn’t secure victory until the leader going into Final Jeopardy!, with $14,800, did not answer the question correctly. If he had gotten it right, his calculated bet of $2,401 would have given him $1 more than Shelton’s total, thus making him the winner.
It was a repeat performance of sorts for Shelton, who beat her competitors on Wednesday by answering the Final Jeopardy! question correctly to finish with a total of $24,400.
On Tuesday, Shelton and her competition answered the Final Jeopardy! question correctly, but Shelton wagered enough to maintain her lead. She won and finished with $16,600.
Shelton, who said she grew up in Mississippi and had moved around the country with her husband before coming to Pittsburgh, will compete again Friday in the episode airing at 7 p.m. on WPXI, which is Pittsburgh’s NBC affiliate.
