Still looking to cut down your own tree this Christmas?

This interactive map shows some of the places in the Pittsburgh region growing real trees you can select and cut your own fresh evergreen.

Those on the hunt for a tree are advised to call first or check the location’s website or Facebook page before heading out, as supplies of mature trees ready for cutting may be limited.

Some farms also offer precut trees as an alternative if cut-your-own service is no longer available.

It’s important to select a tree that will be the right fit for the space where it will be displayed. Measuring a tree, instead of just estimating its size, is recommended, since trees tend to appear smaller in their outdoor setting than they actually are once inside a home.

According to the Michigan State University Extension, the taper of trees will vary, but the ratio of width to height is usually about two to three. That means you likely will need a space that is 4 feet wide for a tree that is 6 feet tall.
