Tony Granato, who was a Penguins assistant coach for five seasons, will be inducted into the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame.
A 13-year NHL veteran, Granato was on the Penguins bench from 2009-14. He coached the team’s forwards and penalty kill and helped the team to the best winning percentage in the league during that span.
He oversaw the NHL’s No. 1-ranked penalty kill unit in 2010-11 (86.1%), as well as set the best regular-season mark in team history in 2011-12 (87.8%).
Granato, 56, also spent six seasons as an assistant and head coach with the Avalanche (2002-09) and was an assistant coach for the Red Wings (2014-16). He now is in his fifth season as head coach of the Wisconsin men’s hockey team.
As a player, Granato played in 852 NHL games and tallied 264 goals and 535 points with New York, Los Angeles and San Jose.
He also has represented Team USA twice in the Olympics — as an assistant coach in 2014 and head coach in 2018.
Granato will be joined by Boston College coach Jerry York, former North Dakota and Omaha coach Dean Blais and four-time Olympian Jenny Potter.
USA Hockey will hold an induction ceremony for the Class of 2020 and ‘21 in December 2021.
Granato’s sister, Cammi, who captained the 1998 U.S. Olympic women’s hockey team that won gold, also is in the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame.
