Editor’s note: The Allegheny County District Attorney’s Office on June 18 withdrew all charges against all people named in this article.

Violence Monday night in Pittsburgh’s East Liberty neighborhood led to 22 arrests for failure to disperse and disorderly conduct, according to police.

Pittsburgh police and city officials have said a small group broke off from what had been an hours-long peaceful protest and began to vandalize several businesses, though some protesters have disputed that version of events.

The melee prompted police to use smoke and tear gas to force out the crowd. Two protesters and nine officers were injured.
