Master shoemaker Brett Walker will conduct the winter quarters workshop series “Leatherworking 101 Document Case” at Fort Ligonier.
The program from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Jan. 25 is a hands-on opportunity for students to learn basic leather-working, hand-sewing and simple decorative skills, according to the museum.
Walker, a re-enactor and historian, is working on a project at Fort Ligonier to examine and catalog a large cache of mid-18th-century archaeological shoes.
Students will make a copy of a leather document case under Walker’s instruction.
The class is intended for those age 18 and up and is limited to 8 students.
Cost is $230 and includes materials. Tools will be provided, and those students with their own tools may bring them to use with instructor approval.
Skills taught in the course can be used in more advanced classes and other ways, the museum states.
