As if a Friday in the middle of summer couldn’t get any better … today is International Beer Day.
Take these “calendar days” for what you will … but we are behind any day dedicated to a brew or two.
According to our friends at daysoftheyear.com: “Originally started in Santa Cruz, Calif., International Beer Day is designated to celebrate the craft of brewing and to show appreciation for those involved in the making of beer. This quickly expanded to include bartenders and other beer technicians.”
It appears we aren’t the only ones who like the idea. Beer lovers from around the world weigh in on celebrating #BeerDay.

Today seems a good day to step outside your hoppy comfort zone and try a new pour in that pint. The Trib’s own brewmaster, Mark Brewer (yes, really) celebrates all things hops, barley and malt in a bi-weekly column — “What’s Brewing?”
Here are a few of his suggestions:
• It’s a funny name, but a tasty beer — it’s a Hefeweizen. The word hefe, in German means yeast. Weizen, in German means wheat. A Hefeweizen is a traditional wheat beer from — you guessed it, Germany.
• Looking for a fruity beer? Truth be told, there might not actually be any fruit it there. Or there might.
• Blonde ales? What gives? Blonde ales are only subtly different than domestic beers. This style makes them one of the “gateway beers” into drinking craft brews.
• Interested in learning more about what beer tastes like? If so, you can start today with a flight or a couple of 5-ounce taster glasses the next time you’re at a brewery.
