A Butler County woman was stopped Wednesday with a loaded 9 mm handgun in her carry-on bag at the Pittsburgh International Airport, according to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA).
The woman was a Petrolia resident, the TSA said.
There were six bullets in the gun, including one in the chamber.
Allegheny County police were contacted, the gun was confiscated and the woman was detained, the TSA said.
It was the 17th gun stopped at the airport in 2019. In 2018, the TSA found 34 firearms at the airport checkpoint.
Nationally, the TSA finds about 11.6 firearms at airport checkpoints each day, with 4,239 discovered in 2018, according to the TSA. Most of the weapons were loaded, the TSA said.
The penalty for carrying a gun into a checkpoint can be more than $13,000, but a typical first offense carries a $4,000 fine, the TSA said.
